Cooking Materials

Choose the Right Materials for Galley Cooking: Eco-Friendly, Durable, and Boat-Smart.

Choose the Right Materials for Galley Cooking: Eco-Friendly, Durable, and Boat-Smart.

Stainless Steel

Why it’s great: Non-toxic, recyclable, rust-resistant, and virtually indestructible — perfect for marine environments.

Best for: Cookware, knives, mixing bowls, utensils.

Tips: Choose 18/10 or marine-grade stainless steel for the best corrosion resistance.

Try: Magma Stainless Nesting Cookware Set or Cuisinart SmartNest 11-Piece Set for your marine cookware needs.

Cast Iron (or Enamel-Coated Cast Iron)

Why it’s great: Naturally non-stick when seasoned, evenly conducts heat, lasts decades.

Best for: Dutch ovens, skillet cooking, bread baking, and one-pot meals.

Tips: Keep it lightly oiled to prevent rust, or choose an enamel-coated version for easy maintenance.

Try: Lodge Cast Iron Skillet or Le Creuset Mini Dutch Oven for slow-cooked stews at anchor, perfect for galley cooking materials.

Silicone

Why it’s great: Non-toxic, heat-resistant up to 450°F, flexible, and lightweight.

Best for: Bakeware, lids, utensils, strainers, and reusable storage bags.

Eco-note: 100% food-grade silicone is reusable for years, replacing single-use plastics.

Try: Stasher Silicone Bags, OXO Collapsible Silicone Strainer, or Silpat Baking Mat to enhance your sailing cooking tips.

Bamboo & Wood

Try: Lodge Cast Iron Skillet or Le Creuset Mini Dutch Oven for slow-cooked stews at anchor, perfect for galley cooking.

Best for: Cutting boards, utensil handles, serving spoons.

Tip: Oil wood items regularly with mineral or coconut oil to extend life.

Try: Totally Bamboo cutting boards — sustainably sourced and perfect for compact galleys.

Enamelware & Melamine

Try the Magma Stainless Nesting Cookware Set or the Cuisinart SmartNest 11-Piece Set for your marine cookware needs.

Best for: Dishes, mugs, and serving pieces.

Eco-note: Enamel over steel lasts longer than plastic and is recyclable; melamine is reusable for years and resists breakage.

Try: Falcon Enamelware or Galleyware USA Melamine Nautical Sets for your galley cooking materials.
