Canned and Jarred Foods

Storm Proof Staples

Canned Proteins:

  • Tuna, salmon, sardines (Wild Planet, Safe Catch, Ortiz).
  • Chicken and turkey chunks (Kirkland, Valley Fresh).
  • Corned beef, Spam, and deviled ham (last-resort options, but useful).
  • Canned beans: black, kidney, chickpeas, navy, baked beans.
  • Canned soups and chili (Amy’s, Progresso, Campbell’s Chunky).

Canned Vegetables & Fruits

  • Tomatoes (diced, crushed, paste, sauce).
  • Peas, corn, green beans, carrots, potatoes.
  • Pineapple, peaches, mango, applesauce (in juice, not syrup).
  • Coconut milk (Thai Kitchen or Aroy-D).

Jarred Goods & Condiments

  • Pasta sauces (Rao’s, Barilla, Classico).
  • Pickles, olives, roasted peppers, sundried tomatoes.
  • Jams, nut butters, honey, and marmalade.
  • Capers, tapenade, and salsa for quick flavor.

Storage Best Practices

  • Remove paper labels to prevent mold and bugs; mark lids with Sharpie.
  • Store in bins lined with towels or foam to reduce rattling.
  • Rotate by oldest first (FIFO) method.
  • Keep a “ready rack” of 5–10 quick-grab cans near your galley entrance.

Climate Variations

  • Tropical: Avoid storing against hulls (condensation = rust).
  • Cold: Prevent freezing by insulating lockers or wrapping cans in fabric.
  • Global passages: Choose aluminum pouches over cans for lighter weight.

Jen's Favorites

  • Wild Planet Tuna & Sardines
  • Rao’s Marinara Sauce
  • Eden Organic Beans
  • Thrive Market Coconut Milk
